Proverbs 8:22-31 — “Wisdom”
“The Lord created me at the beginning of His course, as the first of His works of old. In the distant past I was fashioned, at the beginning, at the origin of earth.” (Proverbs 8:22-23, JPS)
The creation of wisdom was the first of all of God’s creation; before anything else was created wisdom was created. Wisdom is ancient. Wisdom has seen everything happen on earth and in our lives.
As old as wisdom is, how wise are we as a human people? We seem to dispense with wisdom much of the time and not think before we act. We don’t want to have to think too deeply about many issues or what is really happening. We want someone else to think for us; to be wise for us, so we can blame them if something doesn’t go according to our plan. We want life to be simple, not complex. We want easy, not hard.
Wisdom is almost as old as God, and as such we need to remember we have much to learn and the lessons may not be easy, but that is how we gain our own piece of wisdom.
Wise Creator, help us to learn to be wise people. Amen.
