St. Joseph – Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24

When Joseph woke up, he did just as an angel from God commanded and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:24, CEB)

While we are still in the season of Lent, and today is a Thursday in the middle of the season of Lent, let’s take a step out of Lent for a little bit.

Today is the day the Church remembers Saint Joseph, Guardian of our Lord Jesus.

We can learn much from Joseph, though he is mentioned relatively little.

We can learn from Joseph, what it means to be “Manly” especially in today’s world of what it means to be a “man”.

Joseph was a righteous man.

Joseph was a compassionate man.

Joseph was a faithful man.

Joseph was a quiet man.

Joseph was a kind man.

Joseph was a loving man.

Joseph was a man who was unafraid to take a back-seat, play “second fiddle” or “work backstage.”

Let’s learn from him as we continue through this Lenten season, what it means to be a true follower of God.

O God, from the family of your servant David you raised up Joseph to be the guardian of your incarnate Son and the husband of his blessed mother. Give us grace to imitate his uprightness of life and his obedience to your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
