2 Timothy 4:1-5
‘Proclaim the message, be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with utmost patience in teaching’. (2 Tim 4:2, NRSV)
Have you noticed that we are not very persistent? We do not mind attempting something once or twice but if we need to put some real effort into accomplishing the goal we often step back before it is done. Persistent people seem to annoy us as well. People who have a cause and keep hammering on their cause whether or not someone is listening gets on our nerves, we wonder when they will give up. We wonder why they do not see that their efforts are only bringing anguish to others. Why do they keep pounding on the same broken drum? Being persistent takes effort and courage. Jesus did not give up on us. God has certainly not given up on humanity. We are not a lost cause. Paul says to be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable. Be persistent in prayer. Be persistent in showing the love of Jesus to everyone you meet. Be persistent is spreading the good news. Our persistence will bring rewards sooner or later.
O God, you alone know the depths of our heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner. Help us to be persistent in proclaiming the good news. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
