J. C. W. Loehe – Proverbs 1:1-7

Let the wise also hear and gain in learning, and the discerning acquire skill. (Proverbs 1:5, NRSV)

In this celebration of the season of Christmas, as we await the coming of the Magi/Wise Men to the discovery of the Christ child, let‘s look at Proverbs. Perhaps the Magi lived by this passage. We call them Wise Men, and in their travel to follow where the brilliant star led them, they demonstrated their willingness to “…hear and gain in learning…,”and, so, exemplify the Proverbs passage. Whether or not we want to be considered “wise,” what might we gain from being open to learning, especially learning about the Christ—child and God/man? Furthermore, just as the Magi undoubtedly acquired discernment and skill through their travels, what skill and discernment might we be given by God–when we deepen our “travels” toward the Christ—child and God/man?

God whom the Magi found, lead us ever to you. Amen
