Is There a Santa Claus?
Yes and No Virginia. But first allow me to share the text of Hebrews 11:1 ‘For We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses…..’ You see, Santa Claus as we know it today is not the true person we should know as St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was a real person. He was a bishop in today’s country of Turkey. He entered the ministry later in life and utilized his wealth to help the poor and disadvantaged. Thomas Nash a famous cartoonist in the 19th century changed St. Nicholas into an overweight individual with delivering toys and so on. Santa Clause was actually a mispronunciation of St. Nicholas by the Netherlands. His coat was red but to symbolized the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. He saved several people from human trafficking and put gold in their stockings to prevent this horror from materializing. St. Nicholas was even instrumental in shaping the language of the Nicea Council forming the familiar Nicean Creed we use in our churches today.
Lord, thank you for the cloud of witnesses who made a difference in the lives of people. Thank you for the ministry of St. Nicholas who molded and shaped so many Christians and keep the true meaning of Christmas alive in our hearts. May we be the witness of the hands and feet of Christ our lord in preparation of Christmas. Amen.
